Your leadership team is aligned, initiatives are clearly defined, and everyone enthusiastically volunteers to lead their respective actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You walk away feeling unstoppable&#8230; until you get back to the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, weeks later, you find yourself having to <strong>push<\/strong> every team member, individually and collectively, just to get the agreed-upon initiatives to budge. It&#8217;s frustrating, energy-draining, and makes you wonder: <em>Why the resistance?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where a fun concept from psychology can shed some light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introducing: &#8220;Musturbation&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Coined by the influential psychologist <strong>Albert Ellis<\/strong> in the 1960s, <strong>Musturbation<\/strong> is his term for the human tendency to hold rigid, absolute, and irrational demands on ourselves, others, and the world\u2014using words like <strong>&#8220;must,&#8221; &#8220;should,&#8221;<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;ought.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the context of our post-QBR frustration, the &#8220;Musts&#8221; are likely manifesting as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Your Internal Must:<\/strong> &#8220;They <strong>must<\/strong> execute on these initiatives without me having to chase them, because they agreed.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Their Potential Internal Musts:<\/strong> &#8220;I <strong>must<\/strong> focus on my daily urgent tasks first,&#8221; or &#8220;This initiative <strong>must<\/strong> be perfect before I show anyone the progress.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Leadership Lesson: Stop Musturbating, Start Facilitating<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The moment we believe our team <strong>&#8220;must&#8221;<\/strong> behave in a certain way, we replace clear, flexible facilitation with rigid, frustrated demands. We assume that agreement in a meeting translates directly into smooth, effortless execution, but that is rarely the reality in complex work environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of operating from a place of frustration (&#8220;They <em>must<\/em> do this!&#8221;), leadership needs to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Acknowledge the Obstacles:<\/strong> People return to a whirlwind of existing demands. The quarterly initiative is often a <strong>&#8220;should-do&#8221;<\/strong> competing with daily <strong>&#8220;must-do&#8217;s.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Translate Agreement into Action Systems:<\/strong> Did you define the <em>first next step<\/em>? The <em>accountability mechanism<\/em>? The <em>weekly check-in<\/em>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Replace Demands with Preferences:<\/strong> Shift your thinking from: &#8220;They <strong>must<\/strong> do this for the company to succeed.&#8221; (Rigid, frustrating) <strong>TO<\/strong> &#8220;I strongly <strong>prefer<\/strong> they do this, so what flexible system can I put in place to help them succeed?&#8221; (Flexible, empowering)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re tired of pushing, stop assuming the <strong>&#8220;must&#8221;<\/strong> and start designing the system that <strong>enables<\/strong> success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the most common &#8220;Must&#8221; you hear (or think) in your leadership meetings?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve all been there: You wrap up a powerful, high-energy, face-to-face quarterly meeting.
