{"id":4965,"date":"2023-11-15T09:46:36","date_gmt":"2023-11-15T14:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog-alexis.monville.com\/en\/?page_id=4965"},"modified":"2023-11-15T09:56:39","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T14:56:39","slug":"discovery-one-on-one","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog-alexis.monville.com\/en\/books\/i-am-in-charge\/the-experiments\/discovery-one-on-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Discovery One-on-one"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A Discovery one-on-one<\/em> is an approach to prepare and drive effective meetings with people you are not familiar with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why use it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating a relationship with people is key to being able to work with them effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Prepare a board that will make the agenda for the meeting visible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a piece of paper (Letter or A4 will work)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Draw two lines to create three columns on the same width<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Write on three mini sticky notes the three headings to give the meeting structure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To Do<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Progress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Done<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Write the topics that will be covered during the meeting, one topic per mini sticky notes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ice Breaker<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professional Background<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience of \u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 Wishes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>???<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting starts with all the sticky notes in the \u201cTo Do\u201d column (see the figure below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ice Breaker. The Ice Breaker is a game in which you take turns asking each other questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Move the sticky note to \u201cIn Progress\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You only have three questions each, and each person has the right to pass. Here are three examples:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>If you could do anything in the entire world other than your current job, what would it be?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What do you spend most of your spare time doing?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What\u2019s your favorite holiday destination?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once the Ice Breaker is Done, move the card to the \u201cDone\u201d column.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Professional background. You will now share your work history that led to your current role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pick the next note in the \u201cTo Do\u201d column and move it to \u201cIn Progress\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will start first, so make sure to be prepared to cover all your professional background in the minimum time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The other person will go next, once she is done, encourage her to move the card to done.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Experience of \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Depending on Alexis\u2019 role, he has used notes on different topics. He used \u201cAgile Experience\u201d for a mission to drive a change toward agile approaches, \u201cManagement Experience\u201d with a new manager, \u201cWeb Experience\u201d while onboarding a new developer for a Web agency. Pick something that will be relevant to you in your context.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>3 Wishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Time for the 3 Wishes. You end with another game, asking a question: \u201cIf you could have three wishes for transforming your daily work and\/or workplace, what would they be?\u201d Once again, what the people say here will teach you a lot about the organization and their current mindset.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>???<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The last note, with the three question marks, is a wild card to allow the other person to propose any additional topics to discuss.
